“Lenins” Within The Time-Space of Russia: Through The Eyes of Polish Travellers
This article is dedicated to the significant cultural monument that is the statue of Vladimir Lenin. The statues of the revolution leader ( remnants of the Soviet iconography ) are a kind of topos in the accounts of Polish reporters about modern-day Russia. Discourse about “Lenins” is determined by time, space and the sense of sight of foreign observers (not just Polish ones). The visual experience of the travellers symbolically catalogues, or even appropriates, the “other” reality of Russia. At the same time, an outside perspective allows for an unbiased (through bound with nostalgia or with the lasting effects of indoctrination) perception of the monuments which have accompanied Russian people in their day to day life.
